Wrinkle removal and lip plumpers work! Which one is best for you?
There are cosmetic fillers in the form of hyaluronic acid. You probably have heard of them: Perlane, Restylane, Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultraplus, Juvederm XC, Hydrelle. So I thought this little blurb might make it a little simpler.
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component found in our bodies. It is found in our joint spaces and is a joint lubricant. When it is injected into the soft tissues, it acts as a filler, plumping out irregularites and depressions. The hyaluronic acid fillers last anywhere between 6 months and 18 months. When Restylane was under evaluation by the FDA, it appeared to last anywhere between 12 and 18 months. Later, Juvederm was approved by the FDA.
Studies by Juvederm researches revealed that new collagen was laid down during the absorbtive phase of the juvederm. This tended to have a positive impact on the the soft tissue: more collagen deposition, more smoothing of the irregularities and decrease in the depth of the wrinkles in the face! How much is laid down? For how long? Who could ask for anything more?
Since the hyaluronic acids work to decrease the depths and depressions of the facial wrinkles, it is a sought after product. The body tolerates the fillers well without allergic problems. Some patients experience pink or redness from inflammation of the injection which usually lasts less than 24 hours. Occasionally there is some bruising from the injections.
One of the nicer injectables available is Juvederm XC, the standard Juvederm ultra with lidocaine(a numbing medicine). With Juvederm XC, patients often experience less discomfort and greater tolerance. Juvederm HC is slightly more expensive than Juvederm, but certainly worth the added cost.
All in all, the hyaluronic acid fillers are exceptional. Two of the products----juvederm ultra and restylane are available and selected for the usual patient with wrinkles that need "de-wrinkling." Juvederm Ultra plus and Perlane are thicker hyaluronic acid products which are better suited for deeper facial lines and wrinkles. Often patients who select Perlane or Juvederm Ultraplus tend to be older. Hydrelle is the newbie on the block. It is a similar product to the less thick Juvederm Ultra or Restylane.
The thinner products seem to last between 9-12 months wheras the thicker products tend to last between 12-15 months. Individual variability is common. For example, the Restylane tends to last 15 months in my mother! The Juvederm lasts 18 months in my mother-in-law!
